The Desert Botanical Garden of Phoeniz, Arizona, was dedicated February 12, 1939 with plants donated by founding members and rescued from mining operations. After struggling through years of deprivation, the garden began rebuilding after WWII. It is now one of 20 botanical gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums, and showcases more than 50,000 specimens on 50 acres, including more than 140 rare or endangered species from around the world. A charter member of the national Center for Plant Conservation, the Garden is dedicated to saving rare and endangered through its seed bank and propagation programs. In addition, the Living Plant Collection and Herbarium are important resources for international scientific research.
