Montlake Landfill was operated as a municipal landfill by the City of Seattle from about 1926 to 1966. The landfill was closed in 1971. Today, Montlake Fill is a naturalized area on the University of Washington campus that is host to more than 240 different species of birds. In 32 essays arranged into four seasons, the author documents the birds which come here and the things they do, while reflecting on the meaning of wild nature and its relationship to human nature.
